#311: Machshavah
Rav Eliyahu Dessler (Michtav Me'Eliahu, vol.4) writes that in order to achieve true rest and tranquility on Shabbat, we must instill in ourselves the message that Hashem controls what happens to us in the world. Therefore, our efforts to support ourselves will not succeed unless Hashem allows for it:
"Peace of mind on the holy Shabbat is very dependent on the high degree of faith that everything is in the hands of Heaven, in its most literal sense, that everything in the world has a spiritual cause and not a material one."
This message is an important one to internalize and reinforce, even for those who have kept Shabbat their entire lives. Every week, as Shabbat approaches, we should try to put aside all of our concerns related to our work or earning a living, trusting in Hashem that He will supply us with what we need. May we merit to see Hashem's hand in everything that happens in our lives and in the world. To sign up for the daily halacha via WhatsApp or email, click here.
