4,039. Things Non-Kohanim May Do

The slaughter of sacrifices is valid if performed by a non-kohein. This is true even of sacrifices of the highest degree of sanctity – both the offerings of individuals and of the community – as per Leviticus 1:5: “He shall slaughter the bull before God and the sons of Aaron shall offer it.” We see that from receiving the blood and on, the service must be performed by the kohanim. Similarly, skinning, cutting up an offering and bringing wood to the altar are valid if performed by a non-kohein. This is because, regarding the limbs, Leviticus 1:9 says, “The kohein shall burn everything on the altar.” Since this speaks of bringing the limbs to the altar ramp, we see that this stage requires a kohein, but bringing the wood does not.

Similarly, lighting the Menorah is valid if performed by a non-kohein. Accordingly, if a kohein cleaned the lamps and brought them outside, a non-kohein may light them.
